H.S. (Alum Precipitated) Vaccine
- Definition:-
- The vaccine is a formalised culture of a virulent strain of Pasteurella multocida in nutrient broth and treated with potash alum.
- It is used for protection of livestock against H.S. It is recommended in the face of the outbreak. Pre-monsoon vaccination is recommended in endemic areas every year. Animals above the age of six months may be vaccinated.
- Cattle and Buffaloes
- 5 ml. subcutaneously
- Sheep and goats
- 2--3 ml. subcutaneously
- A localised swelling may develop at the site of inoculation which should normally subside within fifteen days to one month.
- It starts developing in 5 days and lasts for five months.
- The bottle should be shaken well before use.
- Keep the bottle away from direct sunlight.
- Gently massage the site of inoculation, after administration of a vaccine.
- The bottle opened once should be utilised fully on the same day.
- Sterile syringes and needles should be used.
- Use of antihistaminics or similar drugs is advised in case of any generalised reaction noticed after vaccination.
- The separate needle should be used for drawal of vaccine from vial and inoculation.
- Vaccine vials showing cracks or damaged stoppers should not be used.
