Enterotoxaemia Vaccine (Type C)

    Definition:-
  • Enterotoxaemia vaccine is a culture of a highly toxigenic strain of Clostridium perfringenes Type C grown in an anaerobic medium , and rendered sterile and atoxic by use of formaldehyde solution,I.P. in such a manner that it retains its immunogenic properties. The vaccine is adjuvanted with Potash - Alum.
  • Use:-

  • The vaccine can be used in sheep and goats for protection against Enterotoxaemia Type C infection. Vaccination in pregnant ewes and lambs is advised for effective immunisation. In Maharashtra, it is mainly used in large animals in Konkan tract.
  • Doses and Administration:-

  • Sheep and Goats
  • 2.5 ml. subcutaneously in loose fold of skin at postaxillary region
  • Cattle and Buffaloes
  • 5 ml. subcutaneously on side of neck
  • In the first year of life primary immunisation is done at 3rd month , 6th month, and 12th month of age.Yearly vaccination is done thereafter.
  • Under field conditions, where previous vaccination status is not known, booster vaccination may be done after 15 days from 1st vaccination. vaccination may be done once in a year, in subsequent years.
  • Reactions:-

  • Normally no reactions are noticed. Local tissue reaction may be noticed in the form of small swelling in vaccine , which should subside soon.
  • Immunity:-

  • It lasts for one year after primary immunisation.
  • Precautions:-

    • The bottle should be shaken well before use.
    • Keep the bottle away from direct sunlight.
    • Gently massage the site of inoculation, after administration of vaccine.
    • The bottle opened once should be utilised fully on the same day.
    • Sterile syringes and needles should be used.
    • Use of antihistaminics or similar drugs is advised in case of any generalised reaction noticed after vaccination.
    • Separate needle should be used for drawal of vaccine from vial and inoculation.
    • Vaccine vials showing cracks or damaged stoppers should not be used.

Storage:-

  • The vaccine may be stored between 40 C to 80 C. The vaccine can be stored for three years at this temperature. The vaccine may be stored at 220 C to 250 C for a period of six months. Store away from light, in a cool dark place.
  • Packing:-

  • 250 ml. Polypropylene bottle containing 50 doses.
