Emu Palan
- Emu farming is recently picking up in the state. A large number of units are being set up in different parts of the state. NABARD is also funding the Emu projects in the state. However, the exact number of Emu farms in the state is not known. Similarly, the information regarding the procurement of foundation stock & marketing is also not available to Emu farmers, therefore study in this area is under active consideration by NABARD.
- Emu farming is said to have begun for the first time in South Africa in 1863 & subsequently in 1987 it was spread up in Australia. In India, Andhra Pradesh is a pioneer to introduce Emu farming in 1996 & in the State of Maharashtra, it has been introduced in 2002. There are approximately 100-150 small scale & large scale Emu farms in the state.
- Characteristics:-
- Family – Ratitae, Origin-Australia Lifespan-30-40years, Resistant to diseases Height- 5-6 ft,.Weight of adult bird is 30-50kg
- Growth of bird –
- Growth completes in 12 months, Production age is 18-24 months.
- After hatch 420 gram, After 3 months: 8 kg , After 6 months: 19 kg , During 15-18 months: 35-40 kg (for meat) After 24 months: 45-50 kg
- Hatching period:- In natural method -60 days, Artificial method 50-52 days.
- Grains, Pulses, green vegetables, fruits, maggots, grass. Feed requirement - average 500 g.m. / bird. As per age starter, grower and layer mash is required.
- Approximately 20 to 40 eggs, in the month of Oct to March only. eggs - 400 to 600 gm in weight. The rate of hatching egg approximately 500 to 700 Rs per eggs.
- 25 to 30 kg meat production per birds, rate – 200 to 250 per kg, meat is 97 to 98 % fat-free and gives strength to heart.
- Production 5 to 8 lit. / bird, Rate- as per quality 250 to 3350 Rs per lit. It is used as pain-killer in skin infection and arthritis.Leather nails and feathers are useful in fashionable leather industry and to make showpieces.
