Black Quarter Vaccine
- Definition:-
- The black quarter vaccine is a culture of Clostridium choevoei, grown in anaerobic fluid medium and rendered sterile and atoxic by addition of 37% to 40% formaldehyde solution I.P. in such a manner that it retains its immunising property.
- The vaccine is intended to use for protection against Black Quarter. Pre-monsoon vaccination is recommended in endemic areas, every year. Animals above the age of six months may be vaccinated. In high incidence areas, the calves of 3 to 6 months may also be protected. Repeat vaccination may also be done if required under exceptional circumstances.
- Cattle and Buffaloes
- 5 ml. subcutaneously on side of the neck
- Sheep and goats
- 2.5 ml. subcutaneously.
- Normally no side reactions appear and the vaccine is safe.
- It starts developing 5 to 7 days post inoculation., and develops fully after 21 days and lasts for one year
- The bottle should be shaken well before use.
- Keep the bottle away from direct sunlight.
- Gently massage the site of inoculation, after administration of the vaccine.
- The bottle opened once should be utilised fully on the same day.
- Sterile syringes and needles should be used.
- Use of antihistaminics or similar drugs is advised in case of any generalised reaction noticed after vaccination.
- The separate needle should be used for drawal of vaccine from vial and inoculation.
- Vaccine vials showing cracks or damaged stoppers should not be used.
