Brucella abortus S-19 Vaccine

    Definition:-
  • Brucella abortus strain 19 vaccine is a suspension of the pure smooth living culture of Brucella abortus of low virulence, in buffered saline solution.
  • Use:-

  • The vaccine is used for control of brucellosis in a herd, where the incidence is above 10 percent of animals. It is mainly used for calf-hood vaccination in females. At places where the incidence is very high, vaccination of empty adult females may as well be undertaken after carrying out the sero-agglutination test and only animals negative to the test be vaccinated.
  • The vaccination of animals in advanced pregnancy is not recommended. All male calves on the farm, if required to be maintained for work, should be vaccinated and castrated after vaccination reaction is over.Male calves that may be required for breeding purposes should be separated from rest of the herd as quickly as possible after weaning. They should not be vaccinated. In case they are vaccinated, they may become reactors indefinitely and if subsequently get infected naturally, they may disseminate the disease.
  • Doses and Administration:-

  • Calves between 3 to 6 months of age
  • 5 ml. subcutaneously on the side of the neck.
  • Reactions:-

  • A slight febrile reaction may be noticed if used in large animals. A hard and painful swelling reaching the maximum on the third day may develop at the site of inoculation but disappears in about a week. The animals otherwise remain normal and feed well.
  • Immunity:-

  • Immunity after calf-hood vaccination is for the duration of 2nd to 5th pregnancy.
  • Precautions:-

    • Care has to be taken regarding consumption of milk and milk products from a herd where adult cows are vaccinated, as the vaccine strain may be localised in the udder, when the organisms may be voided in the milk. Milk should be boiled before use.
    • Care should also be exercised in handling the vaccine at the time of inoculation. Any negligence on the part of the operator may result in infecting himself with serious consequences.
    • The vaccine will be supplied through concurrence from Disease Investigation Section only.
    • The bottle should be shaken well before use.
    • Keep the bottle away from direct sunlight.
    • Gently massage the site of inoculation, after administration of the vaccine.
    • The bottle opened once should be utilized fully on the same day.
    • Sterile syringes and needles should be used.
    • Use of antihistaminics or similar drugs is advised in case of any generalised reaction noticed after vaccination.
    • The separate needle should be used for drawal of vaccine from vial and inoculation.
    • Vaccine vials showing cracks or damaged stoppers should not be used.

Storage:-

  • The vaccine should be stored in refrigerator or cold room at a temperature of 40 C to 80 C. Since the keeping quality of vaccine is low, it should be used within 10 days of its dispatch.
  • Packing:-

  • The vaccine is available in minimum packing of 2 doses i.e. 10 ml. in a vial. It is recommended and advisable to lift the vaccine in person.
